Milan lucky Pellissier unable to control the ball perfectly in the penalty box because of Nesta's a chance to throw it away.

Mourinho: "We should have won it in the first half"

Saturday, 24 October 2009 23:59:07
MILAN - José Mourinho is a happy man after his team's 2-1 victory at home to Catania. "I'm pleased with the way the team played in the first half and with they way they fought in the second," he said.
"It's never easy to go on the pitch after a Champions League match and we made four changes from the game against Dynamo Kiev. It could have been a different, easier match tonight. Just think about the crossbar Vieira hit and the other moves we built. Then, after our opponents' goal we had a bit more pressure and their play left us in doubt until the end."
Cordoba was back in the starting lineup and Mourinho is pleased with the Colombian defender's display. "Ivan was very well prepared to play. I decided to rest Samuel, and Stankovic too because I'm very pleased with the way Vieira is playing at the moment. We might change two or three players against Palermo, but we will see.
"Balotelli did better tonight than his week of training, but I'm satisfied with the team and the three points, which are very important. How did he react to my words? He didn't react. Chivu is doing very well, physically he's very strong and I'm really pleased with his last few matches. Defensively he's very good and he helps us construct play.
"Vieira is working well. He hasn't had any injuries recently. He's not a player with great velocity but he knows how to take his chances. He's a real option for us at the moment. Should Sneijder help out more in defence? I want him to occupy his position and not worry about anything else."
Mourinho concluded his post-match interview by comparing the other teams who have had him as coach, and their rapport with the Champions League. "Porto was a very young team that could play three matches without any problems. Chelsea are the strongest team in the world from a physical point of view. Their shortest player is 1.81m tall. Inter are a bit different. We have players of a different profile. Some of our players have problems playing with lots of frequency. This is why in the next championship matches I might rest some of them who are fundamental for Inter's game so I can have them available for the European matches."

UEFA CUP: Fulham 1 - 1 AS Roma
Marco Andreolli struck a 94th-minute equaliser to earn Roma a 1-1 draw amid dramatic scenes in their Europa League Group E clash with Fulham at Craven Cottage. Fulham appeared to have completed a deserved victory after Mark Schwarzer saved a farcical penalty, awarded when John Arne Riise went tumbling beneath a tame challenge from Stephen Kelly.
Referee Paul Allaerts initially sent off the wrong player, brandishing the red card at Brede Hangeland, before being surrounded by a crowd of angry home players. The official eventually relented, dismissing Kelly instead, and Fulham thought they had escaped when Jeremy Menez was denied by a brilliant save from Schwarzer.
But Andreolli stole in unmarked at the far post and lashed home from six yards out with the last kick of the game.
Hangeland struck his second goal for the club when he headed home a corner by Bjorn Helge Riise, though Fulham’s superiority deserved at least another goal and they should have finished winners.
Roma, 11th in Serie A, arrived at Craven Cottage without talisman Francesco Totti and found themselves in desperate need of his inspiration during a difficult opening.
Marco Andreolli scrambled a dangerous cross by Bjorn Helge Riise to safety before keeper Doni had to make a sharp save off Jonathan Greening’s shot.
Greening saw a second attempt deflected for a corner and Doni remained busy as he moved to gather a curling strike from Kelly that was destined for the bottom left corner.
Paul Konchesky threaded a magnificent ball through to Bobby Zamora but with Andreolli tugging at his shirt, he was unable to create the space to pull the trigger.
Roma were finding Fulham’s crisp passing and movement a handful and when they gained possession themselves they were soon hustled off the ball.
Given their dominance, it came as little surprise when Hodgson’s side surged ahead in the 24th minute. Riise sent a hanging corner to the rear of the box where Hangeland escaped the grappling arms of Andreolli before outjumping the Roma defender to head the ball past Doni.
Roma issued a reminder of the threat they can pose when John Arne Riise - playing against his brother Bjorn Helge - unleashed a blistering 18-yard drive that drew an excellent save from Mark Schwarzer.
Zamora was mobbed by Roma defenders as Fulham pressed ahead once more but the tempo had dipped after the goal. The Italian club were spending more time on the ball but lacked a cutting edge in the final third.
Whatever Claudio Ranieri said during his interval team talk had the desired effect as Roma started the second half with far greater purpose. They even had the ball in the net in the 53rd minute but Daniele De Rossi was clearly offside when he nodded Philippe Mexes’ shot into the net.
Substitute Simone Perrotta dragged a good chance wide as openings appeared in Fulham’s defence, but the visitors were then hit on the counter. Zamora raced down the left wing and directed a long ball across the goal intended for Diomansy Kamara only for Mexes to intervene at the crucial moment.
Doni did brilliantly to pluck the ball from Kamara’s feet after Zamora had engineered a one on one - had he been a fraction later Fulham would have gone 2-0 ahead.
Schwarzer then saved Menez’s penalty as Fulham fans were subjected to a nerve-shredding finale that ended in agony.
# Hangeland gutted
Fulham’s Brede Hangeland acknowledged the disappointment of conceding a late goal in Thursday’s 1-1 draw at home to Roma was hard to take.
Hangeland gave the Cottagers the lead in the Europa League match at Craven Cottage. But right at the end, Mario Andreolli earned a point for the Italians - who missed a second-half penalty.
The Norwegian defender told Five: “I think during the second half they created a few chances and maybe deserved a goal. But with 15 seconds left and the lead, you would hope you get three points - so we are really disappointed to concede a goal at the end.”
Before the equaliser, Mark Schwarzer saved a penalty from Jeremy Menez - which also saw Stephen Kelly sent off for an innocuous tackle on John Arne Riise.
Hangeland, initially red-carded for Kelly’s offence in an identity mix-up, recalled: “He showed the red card to me - I was close to the situation but I didn’t touch him. Stephen was close too - it was cruel to give a red card and a penalty. I just said ‘it wasn’t me’. The referee asked ‘who was it?’ - and no one volunteered … I think we played well in the first half … I think the boys did really well, and we came close to beating a top-class team.”
Cottagers boss Roy Hodgson said: “I’ve got my grave doubts as to whether it was a penalty, but they get given in those situations when a player drives into the box.
“They [the extra officials] got the wrong player with the red card but they should be making it clear that you can’t give that as a last-man foul when someone [Hangeland] is coming across to cover. They bought their best players on, and we were short of numbers and we were short for a corner - which led to them equalising with the very last kick of the game.
“We had a marvellous first half - I thought we played very well. At half-time, we made some changes. But they bought on Mirko Vucinic and David Pizarro, two of their better players. It’s very difficult to play with ten men. But I thought the effort was magnificent, and it was cruel. After conceding a 92nd-minute goal with ten men against West Ham, this is very hard to take.”

The game seems suffered very open, with the Genoa which takes since from the first few minutes "the Bull for the horns", buttando on field personality and intelligence. Mesh Grifo white, but the theme of the meeting for some strokes, recalls a little ranging usually scene to Marassi. Milanetto and companions, in fact, show a good ball possession; Lille, on the other hand, appears to be more comfortable acting in us. The resumption of hostilities the Genoa presents with Palladino instead of Esposito. But the first ring is still hosts, with Vittek stoppato from Amelia. Suffers a little Grifo, the French close and whenever that depart give the impression that we do badly. Juric oozes stuff, Sculli and Palladino prove to give verticality, but 16 ' Amelia must close the door to Aubameyang and Vittek. Mister Gasperini thrown inside Floccari Figueroa at 18 ', but Lucho does to time to take their seats in the Lille doubles with usual Vittek field. Bad blow to the Grifo and game that is still more uphill. Try however to organize boys Gasperini, although often to conflict against the defensive wall erected by Garcia. 30 ' Palladino free to the limit and well concludes: Butelle para. At 36 ' Palacio controls ball with the hand opponent area: perhaps suffered a boost, but Ceferin assigns the foul to hosts. The stopwatch runs, the Genoa seeks the gate to reopen the match. The door right it is however Hazard, entered the half an hour, that invola us, exceeds Amelia and ago down the curtain on the rossoblù evening. Of Lille travel brings the Griffon joys. The season, however, is still long. Already Sunday in Cagliari, may distribute.

Moratti: "A very difficult group"

MILAN - Inter president Massimo Moratti spoke briefly to journalists on his arrival at the Saras offices on Wednesday morning.
This is what he had to say:
President Moratti, are you more angry or disappointed after Inter's draw against Dynamo Kiev last night?
"I'm neither angry nor disappointed. The Champions League is a tournament where we are all on equal footing. Our group is a very difficult group and it has been since the start. There are four teams who are champions of their respective countries. We knew it would be a difficult group for us and Barcelona, and so it is."
How can you explain the difference between the team's performance last night and the game in Genoa?
"We could explain it with the fact that the Champions League is a one-off match in which only one mistake is enough to have a certain responsibility. You would be talking differently now if we had scored more goals last night."

CLEAR IDEAS
During the commercial press conference of A.C. Milan, Delegate Administrator Adriano Galliani answered journalists' questions on football topics. - THE DECLARATIONS -
MILAN - Here are the declarations made by Milan's Delegate Administrator Adriano Galliani during the traditional meeting to present the new partners of the club and the initiatives to involve the Sponsors in the 2009/2010 season, which was held this morning at the Conference Room at San Siro:
"Adidas inform us that outside Europe Milan are the club who sell the most and that our victories are much different to those of our competitors in Italy and Europe. We have a very strong brand value on a global level, this also thanks to Publitalia and what they've done in these twenty years. I remember the first sponsor we found, it was 'Motta', with whom we contributed to originate the concept of sponsor which at the time didn't exist. In these of collaboration between Milan and Publitalia we have done many things."
ON THE SAN SIRO STADIUM
"Our position is very clear: our dream is to be the sole owners of San Siro one day. Few remember that San Siro was born as home to only Milan, it was built in 1926 by then-president Pirelli, we remained alone at San Siro until 1936 and Inter were playing at the Arena. Then Milan gave the stadium to the Milan commune in 1937 and since then Inter also came to play in the stadium because it was the community stadium. We would like to remain the sole proprietors, restructure the stadium and remain at San Siro, in a different stadium from the current one.
I think it's difficult to give a new name to the stadium and I think it will always be known as San Siro also by the sponsors. I made some enquiries but experts always repeat it to me: the new name for the stadium only works if the stadium is new. San Siro is San Siro, it's a very simple matter, the Milan commune have tried to name it Giuseppe Meazza, but no one says 'I'm going to the Meazza', everyone in Milan says, 'I'm going to San Siro'. This stadium will remain San Siro for all eternity."
ON THE EFFECT OF THE SPONSORS ON THE JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW
"In January we'll see, Milan's policy continues, our policy is to keep the club on top of the world. When I talk about the brand, I'd like to emphasize the strength of this brand. Real grew in value despite not winning the Champions League from 1966 to 1998, while we won it in 2007, two years ago. We want to continue flying high, it's obvious that the brand is valorised thanks to victories. The january transfer market is only relative compared to the growth of the brand, we've been here for 23 years and we're very proud of what we've become: we took Milan from a courtroom and turned it into the most winning club in the world, that's why the sponsors follow us and one of the biggest companies in its sector (referring to Infront) has decided to tie its name to us."
ON A POSSIBLE SALE OF THE CLUB
"No one ever said Milan were for sale, it's the press that came up with this news. Officially and speaking for Fininvest, I reiterate and confirm that Milan isn't for sale. We signed a contract with Emirates, but there was never a negotiation with Dubai for a partial or complete sale of the club. I can absolutely deny the desire to sell Milan on Fininvest's part."
ON LEONARDO
"He is Milan's coach, I hope he stays at Milan for many years."
ON THE SPONSORS
"As of today there are two options, one is to renew the contract with Bwin, the other is a new sponsor, there are many companies that want to be on Milan's shirt, we'll see if it will be Bwin in the next months. Milan will only occupy themselves with the two shirt sponsors. In 2010 all the TV contracts will expire, the contracts with Adidas, Milan Channel, Digitalia08, many have been renewed, only the one with Bwin remains. With Infront we will look for main sponsors and we'll be helped by Infront for all the other contracts."
ON THE ARRIVAL OF BECKHAM IN JANUARY
"I won't say it's done because the contract is still going between Milan and Los Angeles, but I'll say we're at 95%. He's a player who has a lot of visibility as well."
ON ONYEWU'S INJURY WITH THE AMERICAN NATIONAL TEAM
"Onyewu suffered a fracture to his tendon, the news came from the United States, it has to be confirmed because in Washington it's night now and if the diagnosis is confirmed the player will be out for six months, I presume. This reopens the problem of players who are loaned out to their national teams, it's a problem that needs to be solved."
ON THE PROTESTS TOWARDS THE ITALIAN NATIONAL TEAM
"I followed the match, but I was in a restaurant so I didn't see what type of protest it was, even though it's disappointing because Italy qualified for the World Cup and it should have been a festive evening.
Certainly we all dream of English or French football where a team is applauded even when it is relegated, but this is our culture."
ON THE CYCLE OF MATCHES AWAITING MILAN
"Every match is difficult, the calendar is fixed and it's known from the start of the year, every month there's a break for the national teams and when it's not there we know we are playing Wednesday and Sunday."
ON THE PLAYERS CALLED UP TO THE NATIONAL TEAM
"We let our Under 20 players go, just like it happened for Albertazzi with Italy. I think Fifa have the duty to regulate the problem of the Under teams and the Olympics which aren't played on Fifa dates. Some certainties are needed because competitions will overlap: in January players will leave for the African Cup of Nations because in the summer it's very hot. Work is being done to solve these problems, there are many divergent interests and they must be allowed to coexist.
The anomaly of football is that the regulating entities are also organising entities. We have to make sure that big competitions like the World Cup and the Champions League can coexist with the national leagues.
Then we have to resolve the problem of the injured players especially for the poorer national teams, who have players who play for rich clubs where they earn a lot of money. They are delicate problems, we're working on them, but it's all very complex and difficult."
ON GILARDINO AND GOURCUFF
"I believe - he says with a hint of irony but always with a smile - to have achieved a national record. When Milan bought Gilardino, the newspapers said it was wrong because he was not a big team player and could only play for a medium club. But then they ask why he was sold, so that's also a mistake. The same goes for Gourcuff. It's tough..."

Trezeguet: "We want a comeback"
David also took the opportunity to speak of the next match against Fiorentina: "For us it will be a very important match because we are coming from a heavy defeat against Palermo and we want to get back to victory. The time we had to prepare for the match was little because only today did we have back our colleagues who were busy in the international matches, but we have the right motivation to play a great match and show everybody that we are an important team".
The defeat in Palermo left everybody with a sour taste but seeing the start of the season by Juventus, Trezeguet could not but underline the positive aspects: "We had a good period notwithstanding the draws and the defeat. We are still close to the top of the table and we played well in the Champions League. The team spirit is positive and we are working to get back to our best playing form. We lost a few players due to injury but we will have other important returns. We want to get back to winning and to doing well and I believe that we will play an excellent match against Fiorentina".
On a personal level, David is going through a good moment: "I am well. I had the possibility for working well this week. The coach will decide and I am available. The most important thing is that I feel well both physically and mentally. I hope that, together with my team mates, I will be able to give the supporters the victory which have been awaiting for a long time and I hope I can score and contribute as I did up to now".
The last thought is dedicated to the French national team, which will be busy with the play-offs to qualify for the World Cup and which might be in need of the excellent sense of scoring of David: "I said I am available because now there are the play-offs and they will be two very important matches and if the coach thinks that I could be useful to the team I would be glad. Surely in the last two matches against Faroe Islands and Austria, France showed it has very strong attackers, therefore if I can contribute so be it, otherwise I will continue to do my utmost for my team which after all interests me the most".

Mourinho on Inter Channel: "I'm a bauscia"

APPIANO GENTILE - One fan asked him to cut his hair. Another, a little girl who plays in goal, asked if one day she will be able to play for a men's team. Others wrote in with their ideal starting lineups, while a tactically minded fan suggested advancing Cambiasso ten metres upfield. "Okay, but we'd need two of them, one ten metres further up and one ten metres behind," was Mourinho's reply on Inter Channel's new programme MOURINHO@interchannel.org, in which the Portuguese coach replies to fans' questions, read out by Roberto Scarpini.
Mourinho dribbled questions about transfers, "because otherwise tomorrow's papers will say Inter are buying this or that player," but he obliged when asked to recommend some good restaurants in London. And in the pilot episode of the new thirty-minute show, which goes out on Inter Channel tonight at 21:00, José Mourinho delved into the world of dialect. "I know what bauscia means; it's Milanese dialect," he said. "Yes, I think that I am bauscia. All the fans know that I give everything for my club, for my team, and for them too. It can't be any different for me. I'm like this. I don't know how to work in any other way."

Friendly: Piacenza 2-1 Inter

PIACENZA - Amantino Mancini put the Nerazzurri in front from the penalty spot, but Davide Moscardelli and Simone Guerra scored in the second half as Piacenza beat Inter 2-1 in Saturday's friendly match at the Stadio Leonardo Garilli.
José Mourinho and Inter's senior youth team coach Fulvio Pea fielded a starting eleven composed of five first team players and six Primavera youngsters for the friendly encounter, which kicked off after a miunte's silence in memory of the Messina landslide victims.
Watching from the stands, Massimo Moratti saw his team create an early chance for an opener when Romeo awarded a penalty after a foul by Tonucci on Vieira in the area. Mancini saw his spot kick saved by Maurantonio, but the Brazilian made amends two minutes before the half hour with another penalty, slotting past the Piacenza goalkeeper after his foul on Vieira.
Inter came out for the second half with Orlandoni, Biraghi and Fossati on for Toldo, Esposito and Carlsen. Quaresma had a couple of chances to increase Inter's lead before Moscardelli equalised with a crisp left-footed shot.
